Emergency Door unlocking

Once in a while you could experience a drained battery and you would really like to get into your car again. Maybe you forgot the lights on, or you have kept your baby stored for some months. But without any power to the centrallocking how can you get in? And there is no way of remote charging without opening the hood? Well, take it easy. Here´s a way to do it, which is BMWs emergency unlocking routine.

  • Walk over to the passenger side front door.
  • Insert key in door
  • Lift handle and turn key beyond 45 degrees to 90 almost, but don't break key!
  • Release handle and lift it again to open door

Note that it will need a little force to turn the key, but don't turn it too much so it breaks.

On some models this procedure works on the drivers door only. I presume right-hand cars especially.

Please always recharge battery through terminals in the enginebay, using an approved charger to avoid damage to the electrical system. However people have reported successful emergency charging through the CD-player powercables in the trunk too.

NEVER start the car using external power, other than through the designated enginebay jumpstart terminals! The starter draws huge amounts of power (well over 100 Amps).

You can read more about this in the following article at Bimmer.org too.
